Why do we need dogs?
We need dogs because….
They love us no matter what. They never hold a grudge. They are only too willing to show their affection. And, often, they know how you are feeling and give you the attention you need. It is very rare to find another human that can fufill all of those functions.
Why are dogs so popular?
Dogs are armed with weapons of mass affection. A wet nose in the palm of your hand, a lick to your check, a wagging tail, eyes that tell you that they love you unconditionally, a leap up onto your lap (no matter what size they are). A dog can turn your tears into a warm feeling of being loved and understood. A dog can fill a void in your life. We need dogs to be there for us when we are at our lowest.
Dogs aim to please
Dogs aim to please us and don’t expect anything in return. Even if you are really busy and don’t give them the amount of attention they would like, they are still your best friend. Even if you go out without them, they are still your best friend when you get home. Even if you go on holidays and are away for a few weeks, they are overjoyed to have you back and don’t hold it against you that you left them behind.
Dogs expand our social life
We need dogs so that we have a compelling reason to get out for a walk. Having a dog that is itching to get out for a walk help us to get more exercise. Walking our dog often expands our social life as we stop and talk with other dog owners. We take our dog to the dog park and meet other like-minded people which can develop into lifelong friendships.
Dogs can help us to smile and laugh more
Dogs can bring joy and laughter into our lives. Sometimes they do the funniest things or have the cutest looks on their faces. Spending time with a dog can certainly give us more reasons to laugh.
We need dogs to keep us healthier
We need dogs to help us to be as healthy as possible. Studies have shown that the bond between people and their pets is linked to several health benefits, including: decreased blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and symptoms of PTSD. 1
Studies have also shown that even small interactions with dogs cause the human brain to produce oxytocin, a hormone often referred to as the “cuddle chemical.” Oxytocin increases feelings of relaxation, trust, and empathy while reducing stress and anxiety.2
