Spoiled Fur Baby: Here’s What You Need To Know Before Getting A New Puppy!
Who wouldn’t want to get a new puppy in their home that they could spoil to their heart’s content? This is exactly the kind of thing that people talk about, and it is exactly what you will want to do from the moment you see that cute puppy face.
Before you go to adopt your new favorite friend, we want you to have this puppy guide to help you know what you need to know about puppy care and how you can best take care of a new puppy that you bring into your home.
Before You Bring Your New Puppy Home
There are a few things that you need to make sure you do before you bring your new puppy home. For example, it is necessary for you to clear out all items from your home that you don’t want your puppy to have any access to at all. This includes things that they may chew on which could endanger them.
For example, you will want to make sure all electrical cords are placed up high and out of the reach of your puppy. They are attracted to things like this, and it can be a major danger for them if they are to chew on those cords.
Get Pet Insurance
This is particularly important if you are going to purchase a high cost purebred dog. If that is the case, then you will want to make sure that you have an insurance policy that can help take care of a lot of the out-of-pocket costs that are associated with taking care of your puppy.
You just don’t want to risk putting yourself in a financial position where you are unable to take care of the veterinary needs of your puppy because you can’t afford it. Sadly, the cost of many vet procedures is more expensive than you might imagine.
People who don’t have pet insurance may find themselves scrambling to come up with the funds necessary to pay for expenses related to their new puppy.
New Puppy Shopping List
There are a few more items that you will want to purchase within the first week that you get your puppy. Ideally, you will have all of these things ready to go when you first bring your puppy home, but you should at least make sure that you get these items before the first week with your puppy has been completed.
Puppy Bed
Sure, you may want to let your new puppy sleep in your bed with you at night, and there is nothing wrong with that, but you should also get a puppy bed for them so that they are able to have a place to rest during the day. Puppies sleep a lot, and they will want to have a spot that is exclusively their own to lay down on when you are not around. Read more about choosing the best dog bed.
Crate
If you need to leave your home and go somewhere that puppies are not allowed, then you will need to make sure you have a crate for them to go into. Some puppies react to crates better than others, but they are an essential part of the puppy supplies that you will need in order to have the best possible experience. See more information on choosing a crate.
House Line
This is simply something that you can use to work on puppy training while the puppy is still in your house and before they have ever been out in public. It is a lot easier to use something like this instead of trying to chase down your puppy every time they get out of your grasp and try to run away.
Something like this is not an absolute necessity, but it can save you a lot of grief and make the experience of getting a puppy a little easier for you to transition to.
Great Items to Spoil Your New Puppy With
Most pet owners will want to make sure they are able to spoil their puppy with certain items as well. Some fur parents even need storage containers for their puppy’s belongings! After all, it is always nice to know that your puppy loves you deeply and that you have done everything to provide the most for them.
Puppy Food
You will want to look for food that is specifically designed for puppies. It is healthier and safer for them to eat this type of food than it is for them to eat regular dog food.
Dog Treats
Puppies love treats! They deserve to be rewarded for good behavior and just for being so darn cute. It is a good idea to get treats that are soft and easy to chew for your brand-new puppy.
Toys
You can expect that your puppy is probably going to have a playful streak. That is great! You will want to make sure you nurture that and encourage them to continue to be as playful and have as much fun as they can. Get your puppy some toys to enjoy so that they can enjoy their playful years as much as possible.
Socialise Your Pup
Get your pup used to other dogs as soon as he or she is fully vaccinated. This could save you a lot of problems in the future as a pup who is socialised when young is less likely to be fearful of, or aggressive towards, other dogs.
You can socialise before vaccinations are all done as long as you know the other dog is fully vaccinated and that the area where they ‘frolic’ is parvovirus free.
Once your pup is fully-vaccinated why not consider minding a similar playful dog occasionally. You can see more information here.
Once you have minded a couple of times, and continue to mind occasionally, the other benefit is that you receive a 10% discount when you have your pup minded.
